“Raise the Chandelier”

“Raise the Chandelier”

At a recent show I overheard an incredible conversation.  Someone was looking for a ladder to raise a chandelier so it wouldn’t cast a shadow on my stage.  They asked for a ladder but one couldn’t be found so the suggestion was that they just leave it as is because it’s not a big deal.  The event planner said “that’s not how I do things.  We always make it the best we can.  I’ll find it myself.”  And they did.  They got in a car, drove away, came back with a large latter and had someone raise the chandelier.

Would the shadow really have ruined the show?  No… but it was the attention to detail, the desire to give their members the most incredible experience, down to the tiniest details, that made the difference between ok and fabulous.

Sometimes we roll our eyes at requests that seem benign.  A portable speaker… we have speakers in the ceiling.  Move the chairs closer… the members will be just fine where they are.  We have excuses for not doing things, but let’s just think about why something is being asked – it’s usually to give your members a better than fantastic experience.

When something is special we just know it.  We may not be able to say why, but subconsciously we feel that there has been an attention to detail.  Raising the chandelier was not noticed by anyone, and it shouldn’t have been, but on a deeper level, the fact that it was raised, raised the bar of perfection.

So, when you produce your next event always remember to raise the chandelier. Get the more expensive speakers, rent the better stage, steam the drapes and when someone says no, just get in your car and get the ladder yourself.  Go the extra step to give your members and attendees a truly extraordinary event.
