It’s OK to Talk Politics – Just Don’t Argue

We’ve all been told that in polite conversation you avoid politics and religion.  But something happened the other week at a show that changed my opinion of this age-old proverb.

At last week’s show, right as the members were walking in, Donald Trump was shot by an assassin’s bullet.  No matter your political views, this was a horrific moment that captivated my audience.  The TVs in the bar were turned on and until the moment my show started, it was all anyone was talking about.  So, when a member started to talk politics with me I engaged and the dialogue that ensued changed my mind about how to talk to people about touchysubjects.

The conversation started as it normally does when I say I’m from California.  I get the standard comments about taxes and politics and I give my standard answer.  But with the attempted assassination, the conversation didn’t end.  We started talking politics and it was delightful.

I discovered a secret.  People like to talk about politics.  What they don’t like to do is argue.  So rather than go back and forth, I listened to my new friend, offered agreements where I found them, explained that I don’t agree with everything but there is some common ground… and then I stopped!

As an entertainer, I am there for everyone in my audience.  Politics, race, sex, or religion have no impact on who I perform for… but if my audience wants to have an honest chat about one of those subjects when I’m not on stage, I’m all for it.

Again, the secret to these conversations is to not argue. Don’t try to convince the other person of your view but rather discuss the common ground, show respect, and end it long before it gets out of line.  These conversations are important.  They show that the performer is more than just the act.  If your view differs from the members or audience, it’s a refreshing change in conversation – as long as it’s in good fun.

So yes, talk politics, talk sex, talk religion… but do it with care.  You may make some new friends!
