Buy Now – Make a Profit Later!

I can’t tell you how many times I perform at a club or venue and they are renting equipment.  Sound, stage, lights… It’s a waste of money!  The excuse is usually that “we don’t have the room to store it” but the truth is, by owning equipment you can recoup your investment fairly quickly and with future rentals or chargebacks, it will turn a profit quickly.

Storage is a real issue, but giving your members and guests the best quality show is really important. Do yourself and your members a favor and invest in some quality equipment for your events.

Below is a quick guide on what equipment you should have… and links to what products I’ve used myself!

SOUND EQUIPMENT

I know you invested a ton of money in your speaker system but the truth is they are really designed for background music. A set of external (portable) speakers and a dedicated microphone system are vital to the success of any event that has someone talking. This is a small investment that will profoundly enhance your members experience, and it is something that will be used weekly as nearly every event needs a microphone and speaker.

SPEAKERS

The Fender Passport system is fantastic. It has a built in mixer so you can control your sound, it’s loud, and it’s very easy to use.  I love when clubs have this system because I know the vocals will be crisp, the music clear, and the sound powerful.

For something smaller, I recommend the Bose S1 Speaker.  It’s a small, battery powered (if needed) speaker but don’t let the size fool you. This little speaker packs a punch.  I place mine on the floor and it fills a room with lush sound. Since you can use it with the supplied battery, this is a great speaker to use outdoors during festivals, golf outings, and picnics!

MICROPHONE

The microphone system in your club is most likely fairly good – but my strong advice is to have one portable system not hooked up to your existing set up. It’s amazing how many clubs have a top class system that they can’t use because someone else set it up. Take control of your options and get yourself a good microphone system that will go with your new portable speakers. It’s good business to have a good mic.

Shure Microphones are fantastic and can really take a beating. It’s the reason why they’re the microphone of choice for touring musicians.  There are dozens to choose from but I like this duel band system. It comes with a handheld and a lavalier.

If you want another option, I recommend the Shure QLXD system. It’s not duel band, so you can’t use both microphones at the same time, but this is a real-deal system that will last your venue for years.

LIGHTS

I find it amazing that in almost half the venues I perform in, I’m placed in the darkest part of the room. There’s an easy fix to this… get yourself some external lights.

A great way to light a stage area is with an all in one light setup. I’ve used these 4 par can LED lights for a few shows and they’re great. Get 2 sets, put them in the back of the room and you’ll never have to worry about lights again!

There’s a second element to lighting and that’s atmosphere lights. Your club should already have some “uplights” but if they don’t grab a few of these and add some ambiance to your room. As an added bonus, these are battery powered and can also be used as stage lights.

STAGE

This is the biggest space taker but it’s something you’ll use weekly and rent to almost every event that books your room. You want a stage that is at least 8 feet deep and 12-16 feet wide. Since a stage is sectional, you should get more than you think you’ll need as different events require different set ups! I’d also recommend a stage that comes with drapes and a small stair. Make sure the stair has removable handrails!. While I haven’t bought from this site, it seems to be a good source for staging needs: THE STAGE DEPOT. You can also purchase stages from ULINE and SWEETWATER – one of my favorite AV companies.

PIPE AND DRAPES

This is optional – but a nice background really classes up the space, and mixed with your new uplights, you’ll have a stellar setting for your events.

Aways get more than you need. This 20′ heavy duty backdrop will cover almost any size stage. I strongly suggest getting a black curtain as well as a second red curtain for those shows where you want a little more pizzaz.
